Six Most Common Australian House Designs & Types

Posted by Tristan Angelini on 19 July 2022

Over the years, Australian homes have changed the way they look. From the Victorian and Boom Style Eras to Contemporary and Brick styles, home designs have been evolving, influenced mainly by styles from different parts of the world. While it is true architectural design is constantly changing and adapting to the current market, at the end of the day, it will still come down to your preferences and what you are most comfortable with.

Here are some of the current trends in Australia when it comes to home designs:

THE NATURAL LOOK

A recent trend that has been making a significant impact in architectural design is the rise of a more natural look on the house using materials such as concrete, handmade bricks, rammed earth, and even timber. These kinds of materials have a timeless vibe that makes them so popular with a lot of homeowners. Not only do they look incredibly natural, but they also tend to get even more beautiful as time passes.

SMALL HOMES

Minimalism is a trend that has been popular for quite some time now. More and more homeowners prefer the look of a simple home – something that does not have a lot going on even at first glance. Because the cost of homes nowadays has also become even more expensive with interest rate increases and such, not to mention energy prices, it can be a lot to handle, so many are starting to opt for something affordable without sacrificing the quality first and foremost. When it comes to homes, smaller sizes have also created a trend. Housing affordability has been a problem, and many believe this could be a brilliant solution. Sometimes, small spaces encourage creativity and resourcefulness to make the place look nicer.

DARK TONES

Darker tones are starting to get even more prominent these days. Before, more people tended to go for lighter tones that made the house brighter and more apparent. But now, darker tones are in. Moody color palettes give off that classy vibe. Dark tones such as blacks and greys, as well as burgundy and maroon, give off that elegant and somewhat romantic vibe. Marbles are also very popular these days, not just on floors but on countertops as well.

MODERN FAÇADE DESIGN

Regarding façade designs, architects have been exploring new ways to make homes enjoyable. Circular shapes and curves on facades are making a noise in home design. Circular-style homes are also starting to become popular in Australia. Experts say this design emulates round structures, a space-saving trick.

PREFABRICATED

When the Australian housing industry faced a post-war crisis, the Commonwealth Government had a plan to continue housing Australians in a more affordable way and thus, the birth of prefabricated houses. Prefabricated houses or prefab homes are special dwelling types made out of ready-made materials easy to assemble and shipped elsewhere. For instance, these prefab homes were built in the UK and shipped to Australia for Australians to use.

VICTORIAN

Early, mid, or late-Victorian homes have this unspoken elegance to them that no one can deny. These houses are brick walled from the outside and then with patterned wallpapers from the inside. If you have ever seen a period drama or film, you know how beautiful they look. It's like you were transported back in time.
