What is the NDIS, and What is the Role of the Building Industry?

Posted by Tristan Angelini on 01 August 2023

We always mention our NDIS projects and how important they are to us. It has been a privilege for us to build and deliver projects to those who are in need. The support it brings to many Australians has been instrumental in changing lives for years. But what exactly is the NDIS, and why is it important, especially in our field?

The National Disability Insurance Scheme or the NDIS is a government-funded program wherein people with disability are given opportunities to experience greater independence as well as have access to jobs, discover skill sets and even engage in volunteer work within their community. Simply put, the aim is to improve these people's overall quality of life.

What connections should one expect to have with this program?

- With doctors
- Community groups
- Support groups
- Sporting clubs
- Schools or universities, and libraries

How is the building industry connected to this scheme? The building industry plays a significant role in the success of the NDIS program, as it is responsible for designing and constructing buildings that are accessible and safe for people with disabilities.

The building industry is responsible for ensuring that the buildings that will be constructed meet the accessibility requirements under the NDIS guidelines. This means that all buildings should have features such as ramps, wide doorways, lowered counters, and other accessibility features that make it easier for people with disabilities to access the building or residential property. The building industry must ensure that the buildings are safe for people with disabilities and, most of all, they meet the required safety standards.

What are the key roles of the building industry in the NDIS?

One of the critical roles of the building industry and businesses such as Hillbrook Projects should be able to build an environment that is accessible for people with disabilities. This means that the industry needs to be aware of the needs of people with disabilities and design buildings that are easy to navigate and use. It is also vital that organisations like ours must work closely with disability organisations to ensure that the buildings they construct meet the needs of people with disabilities.

Another important role of the building industry in the NDIS is to ensure that the buildings are sustainable and energy-efficient. It’s necessary that the industry should use materials and building techniques that are environmentally friendly and that reduce energy consumption. By doing so, the building industry can help reduce buildings' impact on the environment and ensure that the NDIS program is sustainable over the long term.

Lastly, the building industry should ensure that the buildings constructed are affordable for people with disabilities, which means working closely with the government is essential to ensure that the NDIS program is adequately funded. The industry should also look for ways to reduce the cost of construction while still meeting the accessibility and safety requirements under the NDIS guidelines.

The building industry plays a crucial role in the success of the NDIS program in Australia. These responsibilities to ensure that the buildings they construct are accessible, safe, sustainable, and affordable for people with disabilities should be accomplished because of the difference they could make in someone's life.
